- Taft System is an old golf game played between two teams of two. It also goes by the name Best Ball and Aggregate because the points in the game are based on a team’s best ball score and their aggregate score.
- Each player plays their own ball throughout the game.
- Two points are up for grabs at each hole. They are awarded as follows:
- 1 point goes to the team with the lowest individual score. For example, if Player A on Team 1 scores the lowest score among all the players, then Team 1 scores 1 point.
- Both players combine their individual scores to determine the aggregate score and 1 point goes to the team with the lowest aggregate score.
- In case of a tie, the point goes unawarded. For example, suppose players A and B of Team 1 score 5 and 7 while players C and D of Team 2 score 6 and 6. Player A has the lowest score among the bunch (5), and so Team 1 gets one point. However, both teams’ aggregated score is 12. So, no one gets the second point in this scenario.
- In the same way, suppose players A, B, C, and D scored 5, 7, 5, and 6, respectively. Now, players A and C are tied for the lowest score, so no one gets that point. However, since Team B now has the lower aggregate score (11), they win one point.
Variation
Three-Point System:
- The three-point variation of the Taft System is exactly the same with the exception that the best ball is worth two points instead of one.
- Depending on the group of players, they can reverse this rule and award one point for the best ball and two points for the aggregate score.
